Possible problems when using
A handful of applications might need minor tweaks to function properly with DaDesktop
Problems encountered during Fresh Start cloning and their solutions
The majority of applications run perfectly when set up on the Fresh Start machine with DaDesktop (DD). However, a couple of applications don't behave as anticipated because of the cloning process and require a few additional steps to function correctly.
- Oracle Database Server - The hostname needs to be changed from the one that gets duplicated to 127.0.0.1
- Hyper-V server - Hyper-V encounters an issue with duplicate MAC addresses when the External switch is enabled, after cloning from the FreshStart machine
- Google Chrome - On cloned machines, Chrome might not launch properly because of a profile linked to the Fresh Start machine, if the Fresh Start machine wasn't shut down completely during the cloning process
- WSL - Windows System for Linux - In testing, we discovered that DaDesktop machines with WSL installed aren't portable; that is, moving a DaDesktop machine that has WSL to a different DD server results in a failure to boot. The exact cause is unclear, but it's likely that Windows makes assumptions about the underlying hardware, and relocating it to another server triggers issues. Since WSL is seldom utilized for training—Linux is typically used directly—this problem hasn't been thoroughly examined yet
- Problems when a trial software license uses the MAC address to monitor the license - In such cases, the license is bound to a MAC address, so after cloning the machine, it seems like the license has already been activated and consumed.
- Applications needing licenses might have to be installed after the FreshStart clone has been created.
Additional problems that could arise when using DaDesktop
-
Extremely slow VirtualBox performance when using Hyper-V alongside VirtualBox (this isn't exclusive to DaDesktop)
Problem: VirtualBox runs very sluggishly on Windows machines, making it nearly impossible to conduct a course, but the fix is straightforward:
Solution 1: Remove Hyper-V virtualization from Windows:https://www.wintips.org/fix-virtualbox-running-very-slow-in-windows-10-11/
Solution 2: Apply the Hyper-V Server workaround mentioned earlier; otherwise, duplicate MAC addresses cause slow performance, boot issues, and other odd behavior.
- Inability to input specific characters like apostrophes, quotation marks, and inverted commas into a DaDesktop machine.
